Should other nations follow Germany’s lead on promoting solar power? This question was originally answered on Quora by Ryan Carlyle.
It is interesting to note that this engineer comes out strongly in support of nuclear power, in spite of accidents like Chernobyl and Fukishima… and I am in full agreement and have been for years, although not large plants as he might endorse. Ever since reading an article in National Geographic about Micro nuclear plants to power individual subdivisions (and which could power electrics cars for everybody), I have been a strong advocate for nuclear power as a clean, safe and immediately available alternative to burning coal, gasoline, diesel and natural gas (and a way to at least slow that industry WAY down).
What many reading his article may not realize is that, while they are INCREASING their use of coal AND WOOD for power production, as stated, the Germans are also Russia’s largest market for natural gas, buying more than 40% of Russia’s annual production of natural gas by the end of 2009. (just Google “percent of german interest in gazprom”)
What is the main use of natural gas in Germany, besides home heating? The production of electricity. So much for Germany going green. Smoke and mirrors is all it is.
