Warning: contains disturbing imagesOne sunny November afternoon last year, in a suburb of Los Angeles popular with street racers, a CCTV camera picked up footage of an eruption of smoke 100m down the road, first thin and white, then thick and black.

Why does this seem to be a surprise to some?  Many un-discerning people seem to be drawn to gore like moths to a flame…  One only needs to note the popularity of violent and increasingly realistic video games or popular series like “Hallowe’en” and “Friday the Thirteenth” to recognize the image of death is a powerful visual pursued by many.
