Very interesting historical article about the sale by Russia of Alaska to the United States. A number of myths have arisen over the years, some of which are still circulated, popularized in song, and believed by unknown numbers of folks who need to be better students of history. One of the strangest ones is that Russian Empress Ekaterina II (Catherine the Great) is the one who gave or sold it to the US. That would have been quite difficult for her to do, since her reign was from 1762 to 1796.
