More than 50 million bombs, shells, detonators and cartridges from World War II are rusting away on the floor of the North and Baltic Seas or are washing up on beaches. Authorities are opting not to remove the ordnance – and hoping no one gets hurt.

We say we are civilized, yet only a generation or so ago, we dumped or caused to be dumped, tons and tons of high explosives and toxic chemicals into the sea, not even thinking of the potential consequences in later years. Now we say we are more civilized than then.  Are we?  What will be the consequences in the future of the decisions we make, today?
